Background of the Study: End-of-life care is a critical aspect of nursing practice that involves providing comfort, support, and dignity to patients in the final stages of life (Thomas & Black, 2024). In Sokoto State, where healthcare resources are often limited, the importance of quality end-of-life care cannot be overstated. Nurses, as the primary caregivers in many healthcare settings, are central to the delivery of end-of-life care, addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients and their families (Umar & Bello, 2025). However, despite the significance of end-of-life care, there is limited research on the knowledge and practices of nurses in providing such care in Sokoto State.
Nurses are tasked with managing symptoms like pain, nausea, and shortness of breath, while also supporting patients and families through the emotional challenges of impending death. Additionally, they must navigate the complex ethical and cultural considerations that come with end-of-life decisions. The effectiveness of end-of-life care is closely linked to nurses’ knowledge and competence in providing care that respects patient wishes and cultural beliefs (Sokoya et al., 2023). However, gaps in knowledge, lack of training, and cultural barriers may hinder the delivery of optimal end-of-life care in Sokoto State.
This study will evaluate the knowledge and practices of nurses in providing end-of-life care in Sokoto State healthcare facilities, focusing on their ability to manage symptoms, provide emotional support, and adhere to ethical and cultural considerations.
Statement of the Problem: In Sokoto State, many terminally ill patients do not receive adequate end-of-life care due to gaps in nurses’ knowledge and practice. With a growing need for quality palliative and end-of-life care, understanding how well nurses in Sokoto State are equipped to meet the needs of terminally ill patients is crucial. This study will address this gap by evaluating the current knowledge and practices of nurses in providing end-of-life care in healthcare facilities across Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will evaluate nurses’ knowledge and practices related to end-of-life care in Sokoto State healthcare facilities. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining data from patients or families who are emotionally affected by the experience and the potential for biases in self-reported data from nurses.
